The Pleasures of Immersion and Interaction: Schemas, Scripts, and the Fith Business by J. Yellowlees Douglas and Andrew Hargadon
Imersion and Interactivity
Why do people imerse themselves into books, electronic games, stories, etc?
- Social Interest
- Better than reality
- Different consequences/risks than in real life
Key Terms:
-Schema
Essentially a genre convention or predetermined expectation.
Some stories or games pull from multiple preset schema in order to make it's own.
-5th business
A helper to help a story going; an assistant to the story.
It is not always required but it can help or, if used poorly, hurt the story.
Example: Video Game Cutscenes, Voice overs (Apocalypse Now), Dr. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes)
-Time
There is an understanding of time to a story and that is used to determine if we experience the story.
Examples: How long a book is, how long does it take to complete a game.
